Lectors

God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear.

The current group of English Lectors at St. Anthony’s Church, was formed in the mid 90’s by Mrs. Carmen Coelho a prominent member of the Catholic community in Karachi. She did so with the guidance and support of Rev. Fr. Melito Dias, Parish Priest at the time.

Mrs. Carmen Coelho was the first head of the group, a post she held until 2008. Ms. Clara Fernandes took over from her until 2012. That year Friar Clifford Augustine during his tenure at St. Anthony’s introduced the Lectors Committee comprising of a President, Vice President and Secretary on a two-year tenure. Since then we have had five committees, the current being Mrs. Goretti Ali, Priscilla Rodrigues and Demetria Davids. Contact details are available at the Parish Office.

We have a strength of around 20-25 lectors. We take in members who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation. We train new members for around 4-5 weeks in Proclaiming the Word (pronunciation, diction, pace, eye contact, attire etc.) before they are assigned Readings. The English Lectors read for the 7.30 and 9.00 am Sunday Masses at Church, the 6.00 pm Mass at the Presbytery and on Feast Days.

A monthly meeting is held on the 2nd Thursday of the month at 7.30 pm in the parish hall and practices for Sunday readings are held on the prior Thursday after the 6.00 pm Mass in the Church. Over the years, the Lectors group has arranged/attended talks/sessions/retreats relevant to their calling.

May the Lord be in your heart and on your lips
that you may worthily proclaim His Holy Word!
